September 2005 Album Blog
What an interesting month September 2005 turned out to be. It covered photographs I took in Peru, Miami, London, Wiltshire, Leicester, Somerset, The Cotswolds, Sussex and Bristol. In the next blog I'll talk about how lucky it was that I choose 2005 for the project. I travelled a lot during the year and could never have known that the year would include visits to places as exciting as Miami and Cusco, Peru.
But first to September 2005's album. It covers some wonderful highs and some lows too. The lowest point happened as a result of taking the 6th September photograph 'Uncovering Ancestors'. I had gotten out of my car, to take the photograph and investigate an archeological excavation happening on an ancient burial mound. Stupidly I did not locked the car (it was in a quiet part of the countryside). Then I saw a car drive up and then leave in a hurry with, it turned out, my rucksack containing a few hundred pounds of electronics and books in it. Oh well, that's why the 7th September photograph is called 'Learning the Lesson of Loss'. The road sign seemed somehow symbolic.
There was also a lot of fun too, especially the many photographs I took with Phi, leaping into the air in front of the ancient long barrow of Balas Knap. Choosing a favourite from the many excellent shots we took wasn't easy.
Similarly, I still have over 40 of the attempts I took to get the photograph of 'A Night Light' on the 10th September. The room was in complete darkness, save for a single 'tea light' candle high up on a shelf. The photograph was taken on a timer with an initial flash on my face, then I waved the camera in the direction of the candle light. This gave the impression of light trails appearing to strike my forehead. There were a number of interesting results, but this one came closet to my original idea.
The Web from the 9th September always seems to get a good reaction from people who see it. I had spotted the morning dew soaked webs on the way to work.
'The Hummingbird' on the 23rd September originated from wanting to further explore the ideas I first had when taking the 6th May photographs (have a look at The Aviator Angel).
Looking back at the September 2005 album now, there are a couple of impressions that dominate. The first is the attempt to capture strong colours in a number of the photographs, particularly blues, red, oranges and greens.
The second, and most notably, is how I wanted to explore darkness and shade. There is a run of photographs toward the end of the month, which were all taken at night or in low light.
Finally, I must to mention the fantastic visits to see Sylvia Lucia in Miami and to see David and Vanessa's wedding in Peru. What an experience and an opportunity. But you'll see much more of both of these events in the October 2005 Album.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy September's photographs and are inspired to start your own projects.
Thank you.
